In October 2011, YWDEP piloted a drumming school for girls to run for 12 weeks. Girls ages 8-14 enrolled in the school and met weekly, focusing on learning percussion techniques including both hand and stick drumming. YWDEP’s first drumming school session successfully culminated with a halftime show for the DC Roller Girls, DC’s roller derby team, in January of 2012.

YWDEP’s Drumming School participants performed at five local events in its Spring 2012 session, and recently completed it’s Fall 2012 session as the featured act for a Kwanzaa celebration at the renown Union Temple Baptist Church in Southeast Washington, DC. YWDEP offers open enrollment for this program. Girls can enroll AT ANY TIME – the only requirement is that girls A. Be at least 8 years of age; B. Fill out the YWDEP application form (link); and C. Make a commitment to showing up to the sessions.

Enrollment fees are negotiable; scholarships are available and no girl is turned away due to lack of ability to pay. Drumming School is held on Saturdays from 1-3 p.m. at the YWDEP studio inside the New Sewell Music Conservatory, 712 Kennedy St NW, Washington, DC 20010.
