SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

SEP participants work together to untangle the human knot!

YWDEP enrolls young women from DC and surrounding areas to participate in its Summer Enrichment Program (SEP), an 12-week series of workshops that elevate their confidence; build their skills of self expression; affirm them as strong and intelligent; and give them a safe space to grow into artists.

YWDEP gives community artists and young women an opportunity to grow meaningful mentor-mentee relationships while engaging in a process of developing original rhythms, poetry, song, and movement choreography. The 8-week series culminates in an annual public performance, which is open to the DC community. The performance serves as a rite of passage for many young women, who, after an intense process of self examination and learning in the arts, transform their shy reluctance into powerful words, beats and steps that inspire and amaze audiences.

Many hands help to make the SEP happen. YWDEP employs up to 13 artists a year, as well as 3-4 Peer Mentors — young women who are past graduates of the SEP and are trained to mentor their younger peers. YWDEP also engages a group of adult volunteers who assist the young women in their artistic process, along with college interns who have the advantage of participating in workshops while experiencing the inner workings of a non-profit organization.

After the performance ends, YWDEP continues to perform at a variety of venues throughout the year.
